Mother’s Day is a holiday with a lot of expectations. What do you get for a woman who carried you to term for nine months, birthed you, and then took care of you for your entire life as a child. It is a difficult question with very few, if any, solutions. You cannot truly pay your mother back, that’s the whole point–it’s a selfless act. But, you can offer her something that she wants but doesn’t have. This author makes a compelling case hat breast augmentations are amongst those gifts.

Is plastic surgery a good Mother’s Day gift? Now that Easter is over, the advertising blitz for the holiday celebrating mom is in overdrive. Many plastic surgeons are getting in on the advertising by offering discounts and specials geared towards mothers.

Personally, my mother wouldn’t like that as a gift–but I understand many mothers would. For those with whom this would not be weird, I’m sure breast augmentation, or other procedures, would make a great gift that would stay with the mother for life.

Breast augmentation is a procedure with its fair share of proponents and opponents. However, if a plastic surgery procedure is going to have an opponent, you could not hope for a better enemy than Hugo Chavez, who apparently detests the very idea of breast augmentation. I have a feeling even the women of Venezuela do not care what he thinks, much less the women of the world.

In a recent speech on national TV, Chavez blamed doctors who “convince some women that if they don’t have some big bosoms, they should feel bad.”

As many as 40,000 women in Venezuela get breast enlargements each year, according to the Venezuelan Society of Plastic Surgeons. That’s an average of about 1.4 breast operations per person.

Apparently Venezuelan women perform very well in international beauty pageants and this is presumed to be part of the reason why. Venezuela may have a high rate of breast augmentation, but this is just a cultural phenomenon, not something that is actually harmful towards the women of Venezuela.
